The Bullwhip Effect and Your Supply Chain

The Bullwhip Effect and Your Supply Chain There are a lot of uncertainties when it comes to your supply chain and in order for you to avoid most if not all of them you need to understand how it all works and know that one simple mistake might ruin the balance in the supply chain. Both in life and in finance balance is crucial because one wrong move can put you and your entire company in debt leading to a slow state of recovery at best. One of those wrong moves is not knowing what the Bullwhip Effect is and how to avoid it.Once you figure out how you can avoid getting caught in the Bullet Effect you will be more careful when making your financial moves and also know how to forecast future events much more effectively.Don’t let this introduction scare you because I’ll be explaining everything you need to know when it comes to dealing with the Bullwhip Effect. So without further ado, let’s jump straight to it.WHAT IS THE BULLWHIP EFFECT?The Bullwhip Effect commonly referred to as the Forrester effect and is called the Forres ter effect because it originated from Jay Forrester and he wrote a book in 1961, called “Industrial dynamics” and he was basically trying to explain to account for the unforeseen spikes in demand within a supply chain. These unforeseen spikes in demand within a supply chain have a reverberating effect throughout the entire supply chain to the extent where every member of the supply chain wraps up their inventory counts to account for the demand that they suddenly came face to face with. How this works is everyone ramps up their inventory counts and then all of a sudden for example the next month or two the demand is not there anymore and you are left with a lot of products in your inventory and not a lot of sales to back it all up.This is basically a very simple and straight forward process to understand, but what I see is that a lot of companies today are either unaware or choose to ignore it or even think that it doesnt that much of an impact, but they are terribly wrong.FIVE CR UCIAL PARTS OF THE BULLWHIP EFFECTThere are five signs you can look for in order to make sure the bullwhip effect is not going to impact your inventory or at least give you some insight into what to look out for in order to make sure that you are protected against these unforeseen spikes in demand.Essentially, what the bullwhip effect shows is that every member of the supply chain relies on the other:The vendor sells the manufacturer raw materials for the product; The manufacturer relies upon the feedback in terms of forecasts from the distributor;  The distributor relies upon the wholesaler in terms of product orders; The wholesaler relies on the retailer in terms of stock. And this typical order of supply chain can easily be disrupted simply when one day you have this consumer or a series of consumers that come in and they all of a sudden place this huge order and they essentially liquidate the retailers’ inventory completely.A MORE PRACTICAL EXAMPLETo put things more into perspect ive Im going to give a simple but more practical example of how this all works.I dont drink beer but I think that beer is a good example and I will tell you why later. So let’s say that the consumers are buying beer and a whole group of people comes in a period of about a month and they buy the retailers whole inventory and let’s say that the retailers inventory was about 500 cases of beer and at the end of the month it is down to zero.Typically the retailer sells a certain amount every two months and all of a sudden they sold this two-month volume all in one month and so their anticipation is that they are going to be selling that amount every single month moving forward. What happens is and of using 500 cases of beer every two months they think that they’re going to need 500 cases every month, and this is where it all begins. The retailer sends an order over to the wholesaler for 1000 cases because what they want is to replenish their inventory to account for this new demand th at they see so the wholesaler gets this order. What happens next is that the wholesaler wants to place a larger order of 1500 cases of beer to the distributor. Then the distributor has to buy more from the manufacturer and place an order for 2000 cases. And finally, the manufacturer thinks he needs to buy more raw materials and they place a larger order for raw materials in order to match this demand. When all the orders fall into place virtually every subject of the supply chain has doubled their inventory because they expect that the demand now that it has doubled will stay that way, but that usually isnt the case.THE MAIN PROBLEMWhat happens is this all looks fantastic to everyone, because all of a sudden there is this increased demand and they think it’s going to continue, next month when the consumers come in and their order volume is 250 and it puts all of this out of line because everyone’s inventory is higher than it was before. How this manifests is when the wholesaler calls the retailer, the retailer will say that they have plenty of inventory, and the distributor calls the wholesaler the same problem,   later the manufacturer calls the distributor- again the same problem, the vendor calls the manufacturer, you guessed it -the same problem. And this is why it’s called the Bullwhip Effect. It’s this process where a single and sudden change in demand has a reverberating effect across the entire supply chain.Sounds scary and is even scarier in reality. In order for this to not happen to your supply chain, you need to understand some key elements when it comes to knowing how the market functions and how to avoid bad investment plans. What you need to do as a company in order to make sure that you’re aware of these type situations and that it can be a little bit more proactive, and also that there can be some unforeseen events which can quickly create the Bullwhip Effect.WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW1. SeasonalityOne of the things you need to pay attention to is seasonality and what it means that in some consumer markets there are certain times a year where are demand suddenly spiked. So in terms of beer (I said I was going to get back to beer) every super bowl Sunday beer spikes in demand, the same goes for Thanksgiving and Christmas or any other holiday when you can expect a large family gathering.Planning ahead when to make a large order and when not will help you not get stuck in the Bullwhip Effect and will assure that you don’t make that mistake just because of a sudden change in demand.2. Business CyclesIn other markets it’s a concern of business cycles, it’s common for some companies that have some quarters that are busier than other so you need to understand which quarters are going to have a rapid change in demand and which won’t.For this element, it takes some planning skills and also market research because you arent careful one unexpected change in demand can have an impact on all of your quarters. The Bullwhip Effect is a magnet for business cycles so take care.If you are able to stop the Bullwhip Effect in one or more of your quarters right at the very start you might manage to stop it from impacting other quarters as well so this is an important element to keep an eye on. 3. New Production IntroductionThe third thing you need to understand is new product introductions now one of the things that happen is that we live in a digital market where things can catch on very quickly and products can become suddenly extremely popular. And a lot of times companies launch a product not understanding just how much a product can become popular because they can’t possibly see it so suddenly that product takes off and there is a sudden mad rush to go out and buy that new product. But then that demand goes off, and if you look throughout history in terms of consumers introductions with products, for example, the Sony PlayStation, you will see a large spike in demand and people will go to extreme measures just to buy that product. This sudden spike in demand is the main reason why some companies after releasing a popular product fall into the trap of the Bullwhip Effect because when that new product becomes old news, they are left with a massive inventory and are forced to sell the product at a much lower price, liquidating their income.4. End of Product LifeAnother thing you want to pay attention to is the end of life of a product because of all of sudden a company says that they aren’t going to make this product anymore whether because they think it won’t sell as much as they are used to or just simply want to start producing a different one. This also causes a mad rush to go out and get what’s left of that product because there are people who are nostalgic and they like the product or they anticipated this would happen but the moment they hear that the company is going to stop making the product they suddenly rush out and they basically buy as many of that product as they possibly can.The same problem occurs again, the company seeing that the product that they want to stop selling suddenly became popular again wants to make more profit as much as possible and they quickly fall into the Bullwhip Effect.5. The UnforeseenThe fifth element is the unforeseen circumstances where you just can’t account for this sudden and drastic increase in demand and this is the most common cause of the Bullwhip Effect mainly for newer companies who don’t yet have an idea of how their products are viewed on the market. What you need to pay attention to is how the consumers are reacting to your product in terms of:Quantity â€" How much of the product you typically sell in a day, week, month or year.Expenses â€" How much do you spend on the finished product when you take into account its way from the manufacturer to the shelves.Profit â€" Is this a product which brings you your main source of income or just one portion of it, and do you want to make the risk of getting more of t hat product produced in order to increase your profit. There isn’t a recipe for dealing with the unforeseen circumstances, you will need to either take risks and profit from them or learn from your mistakes.KNOWING YOUR CONSUMERSThis is easier said than done but if you get to know your consumers need early on and start developing a pattern you will quickly get a grasp of knowing when a sudden change in demand could occur but nothing is certain.Look at this as like a precautionary measure, if you know the average amount your consumer buys in a month, try not to step away from that number or at least try to gradually add more of the product in your inventory in order to see if that will work.By adding or removing the product gradually from your stock you can easily pinpoint a round amount of how much of the product your consumers buy and also how much you are expected to have in inventory if a sudden rise in demands does happen. When you start to pay more attention to how your consume rs react to your product you will see what portion of your supply chain you need to be careful the most but more often than not it starts from the retailer which creates a domino effect in terms of increasing orders from the retailer all the way to the manufacturer. This is very nitpicky and sometimes it seems like too much effort, but Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was any big company so patience is vital.THE MAIN CAUSE â€" GREEDNow I want to talk about something few business advisers will tell you which is that the main cause of the Bullwhip Effect isn’t just a sudden change in demand but also one of humans’ seven deadly sins and that is greed. Now it’s normal for a company to double their inventory when they see a change in demand but some companies go to the extent where they blindly take that risk right off the bat without thinking of the consequences or simply by not knowing how the supply chain functions.Dont try to make a risk if you arent sure it will work, th is will save you a lot of time and a lot of money and instead of wanting to make more profit than youre used to trying to maintain the usual state of your supply chain and learn how to protect it from failure.Sometimes in the world of finance, it isnt all about making more money but instead about how to keep the status quo. This sounds terrible for some but helpful for others, depends on your viewpoint on things I guess.LEARN FROM OTHERS MISTAKESI would like to remind you that the economy, like history, is bound to repeat its self, but what economy does even better than history is it tracks the rise and fall of great companies in its record of finances so you don’t have that problem of proving whether something has worked before or not. What Im trying to say is you literally have living proof throughout the history of big companies and their financial moves and more importantly if those moves that they made have paid off.Learn from others mistakes not from your own ones because it w ill surely cost you cheaper or nothing at all and you dont have anything to lose except a little of bit of time while planning your next move.Once you understand what to do, what to expect and how to turn your plan into reality you will easily avoid the Bullwhip Effect and it’s devastating on your supply chain. And another thing â€" don’t be greedy.EXPECT THE UNEXPECTEDEverything can go downhill by just one wrong move and a good way to avoid this is planning which some companies, I don’t know for what reason, either avoid doing or don’t do well.In order for you to not be in that position where your entire supply chain has a bigger inventory than its sales, you need to plan ahead and foresee the unforeseen even though it is literally impossible.Sometimes even if you know your consumers very well to the point like it seems you know them personally, you can easily fall in the trap of the Bullwhip Effect just by not planning ahead your short term and long term goals. So you need to stop and think for a second what are you trying to achieve and whether you want to keep the situation as is or if you want to move forward, but keep in mind that you can’t forecast everything that will come in the way of your goal.Expect everything, do your researches, plan every single possible outcome and it will eventually pay out, you just need to be consistent and not get demotivated WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET TRAPPED IN THE BULLWHIP EFFECTThis is a common question from the companies which have experienced the Bullwhip Effect and a large portion of them do eventually go into debt by not knowing how to get out of the mess that they’ve created. The simplest answer I would suggest for you to try is simply waiting for your inventory to go down to the stage it once was because there is nothing you can do which can have a quick result of solving this problem if you want to keep the same profit as before.Another thing you can do is sell the product at a much lower price in order to q uickly empty out your inventory, and try not to make the same mistake twice because the next one could be deadly to your company. But if you do find yourself in this situation try not to panic and maybe start thinking of closing down the company and instead try to move forward so you can recover as quickly as possible. At the end of the day at least you felt the Bullwhip Effect on your own skin and now know how to avoid it in the future. FINAL WORDTo summarize, the Bullwhip Effect is a big trap for any supply chain and company who acts before it thinks so try not to fall in that never-ending cycle of having more in stock than in your sales account especially if you have a food supply chain because the food can spoil and go to waste before you even recover from your losses leading to even more debt. The Bullwhip Effect is like a deadly disease, which can completely abolish your whole supply chain which at first it doesn’t seem to have a huge effect until the backlash happens, and sudd enly you realize that you’ve bitten more than you could chew.Try to utilize everything that I’ve talked about here and also see on what key element you need to pay attention to in your supply chain and I’m sure you won’t have this problem if you know the consequences.Nevertheless, everyone likes to do business in their own way but the Bullwhip Effect can occur in every supply chain so be careful and watch out.

Student Debt Is A Major Issue - 1783 Words

Student debt is a major issue, especially in the United States. It often impacts on a student education. Mostly, students from middle class family suffer from it. In the United States, the cost of tuition fee is very high, which is the most common reason behind student debt. Though there are various scholarships and federal aids for the students to help with tuition fees, most of the universities and colleges don’t cover full amount of the tuition fees, which leads the students to take loans, which causes student debt. However, there are also difference between universities and the loan system. Federal colleges and universities often have affordable tuition fees, which often don’t require students to take loans. However, tuition fees of private colleges and universities are extremely high, which don’t only require students take loans, but sometimes, the loans are even sufficient to cover all the tuition fees. Moving to the loan system, there are two types of loan s; loans with interest and loans without interest. Loans without interest are usually better and affordable to take, but loans with interest are very expensive and not affordable to pay at all. And often, loan with interest is what leads to the student debt. After all, high tuition fees and loans with high interest are the reasons behind student debt and the problems with student debt are enormous. Opportunities And Threats For Building Environmental Sciences Essay Free Essays

Every individual on Earth is exposed to environmental radiation. This radiation consists of natural radiation, cosmic radiation and external radiation. External radiation derives from the medical activities, such as X raies or accidents in atomic workss, while natural radiation derives from the decay of radioisotopes in dirt or in bedrock. We will write a custom essay sample on Opportunities And Threats For Building Environmental Sciences Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now These radioisotopes may be answered either as a consequence of human activities, such as Strontium-90 ( A 90Sr ) and Technetium-99 ( 99Tc ) or with physical presence like Uranium-238 ( 238U ) . The decay of 238U green goodss Radium-88 ( 88Ra ) and the decay of 88Ra, eventually produces Radon-222 ( 222Rn ) . Since the 2nd portion of twentieth century when plentifulness of mineworkers suffered from lung malignant neoplastic disease, a batch of research has been conducted on the effects of Rn on worlds. The last 20 old ages and more, the effects of Rn in residential sector have been investigated. Because of this the undermentioned study was necessary to discourse the issues with Radon in homes. 2. Radon, beginnings and effects 2.1 Radon Radon-222 is a chemical component which has atomic figure 86 and belongs to baronial gases. ( Table 1 ) What is more, it has 3 chief characteristics: it is colorless, odorless and tasteless, and as a consequence it can non be traced by human senses. In add-on, it is chiefly in gaseous stage and and its half life is 3.83 yearss. Al-Saleh ( 2007 ) writes that the half-life clip of Rn makes it more of import than other isotopes ( 220Rn, 219Rn ) . Because of the fact that Rn is radioactive, it comprises a risky component for human wellness. Table 1 Beginning: hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File: Periodic_table.svg Finally, radon concentration is measured in Becquerel per three-dimensional metre ( Bq/mA A 3 ) in SI and harmonizing to UNSCEAR ( 2006 ) ; typically Numberss for indoor and out-of-door concentration are 100 Bq/ mA A 3 and 10 Bq/ mA A 3 correspondingly. A 2nd unit for radon concentration is picocuries per liter of air ( pCi/L ) and the relationship between the two units is: 1 pCi/l is tantamount to 37 Bq/m3. 2.2. Radon out-of-doorss As mentioned before, Rn is produced in dirt or in bedrock from the decay of Uranium. Because of its gas stage, Rn is diffused in permeable dirts through clefts and so it can be released to the ambiance. When the component enters in atmosphere, it is dispersed and so the concentration is really low. Therefore, radon out-of-doorss is non unsafe for human wellness. 2.3 Radon indoors Harmonizing to BRE ( 1991 ) , â€Å" Rn enters in edifices chiefly by air flow from the underlying land. † Radon is the densest gas, as a consequence to be concentrated below edifices. In add-on, the different force per unit area between the dirt and the indoor may do clefts on the ground-floor concrete slab which are the way that radon gas discoveries to come in the edifice and that difference is besides the necessary force which radon demands to come in. ( Figure 1 ) EPA ( 2012 ) indicates that good H2O and edifice stuffs are besides means with which Rn is transferred into houses. However, it continues reasoning that Rn through stuffs is non unsafe every bit good as H2O, when its beginning is surface H2O. After come ining inside the house, Rn is trapped and it starts to disintegrate. This poses a menace for residents because ; as UNSCEAR ( 2006 ) argues â€Å" radon and its decay merchandises cause lung malignant neoplastic disease † . Khan ( 2000 ) explains that this phenomenon is happened because the restricted airing inside the houses permits Rn and its girls to make high degrees of concentration. Therefore, they enter in human organic structure through respiratory and they are deposited in the lungs. Finally, Rn and its girls, particularly ephemeral offsprings: Polonium- ( 218, 214 ) , Bismouth-214 and Lead-214 emit alpha atoms which lead to malignant neoplastic disease. As WHO ( 2009 ) references, Rn is deemed the 2nd cause after smoking for lung malignant neoplastic disease in the general population. Figure 1: all possible waies which radon can follow Beginning: BRE 1999 3. Radon: Protective-remedial steps EPA ( 2012 ) writes that new edifices should be built with Rn protection steps and should besides be tested for Rn concentrations after tenancy. BRE ( 1999 ) , EPA ( 2012 ) and WHO ( 2009 ) reference that all the bing edifices should be tested for radon concentration. However, as EPA ( 2012 ) argues, there is non a degree of radon concentration that it can be deemed as a safe figure. This is explained by WHO ( 2009 ) which writes that the invariably exposure to â€Å" low or moderate † Rn concentrations causes more lung malignant neoplastic disease instances than exposed to high. Therefore, even if homes have concentrations lt ; 4pCi/L, remedial steps should be implemented for cut downing the figure to the lower limit. 3.1 Protective steps for new homes Basic Rn protection Initially, new homes can be protected by implementing a radon-proof barrier between the dirt and ground-floor concrete slab. This technique is named â€Å" basic Rn protection † ( BRE 1992 ) and can be used to a suspended, unmoved and ground-supported concrete floor. In peculiar, a damp-proof membrane is installed between concrete floor and floor toping ( Figure 2, 3 ) or under them ( Figure 4 ) which secures the airtightness of the house. It is significant to be mentioned that this method should be implemented decently because there are many dangers like damaging the uninterrupted signifier of the membrane. In add-on, this membrane should cover any wall pits so as to be a barrier for Rn and by and large be uninterrupted to the whole building site. If any specific country demands to be sealed or lapped, chiefly articulations, it should be done right. Therefore, craft should be high-quality. Following these stairss, the edifice lessens the infiltration through clefts or gaps an d it is protected by Rn. Figure 2: damp-proof membrane Figure 3: damp-proof membrane in suspended concrete floors in unmoved or land supported concrete floor Beginning: BRE ( 1991 ) Beginning: BRE ( 1991 ) Figure 4: damp-proof membrane in unmoved Figure 5: full Rn protection in suspended or land supported concrete floor concrete floors ( natural airing ) Beginning: BRE ( 1991 ) Beginning: BRE ( 1991 ) Full Rn protection BRE ( 1991 ) argues that the above method is non so effectual while, BRE ( 1999 ) writes that in countries with high concentrations more techniques should be used during building. These techniques are the usage of Rn sumps and usage of natural airing in suspended concrete floors. Natural-Mechanical airing In suspended concrete floors below the slab, natural airing system can be constructed as in figure 5. Meanwhile, the place of fans can besides be created because there are possibilities that the natural airing consequences may be unequal. Therefore, this method combines characteristics of natural and mechanical airing ; nevertheless its effectivity is non certain. Radon sumps Radon sumps are particular buildings which are placed in dirt below the slab in ground-suspended floors. There are two sorts of sumps: depressurised and pressurised sumps. The former has as a consequence the extenuation of Rn from dirt to the ambiance, while the latter leads the Rn gas off of the dirt where the house is placed. They can besides be distinguished in two sub-categories: passive and active. ( Figure 6, 7 ) Passive sump systems do non use fans while active sump systems do use. The map of Rn sumps is based on I ) the stack consequence and two ) the air current consequence. These two phenomena secure that the motion of the radon-laden air throw pipes will be natural. The stack consequence is based on the construct that the warm air moves upwards. The interior decorator has to procure that the pipes used for breathing the radon-laden air will travel through warm topographic points of the house. As a consequence, the air inside the pipe will be warmer and will be given to travel upwards, making a drive force inside the pipe. Therefore, the Rn gas in sump will be emitted to the ambiance of course. ( BRE 1996 ) Figure 4: Typical Passive Sump Figure 7: Typical Active sump Beginning: BRE ( 1996 ) Beginning: BRE ( 1996 ) The air current consequence is related with the phenomenon that when air blows on or above a surface, tends to make a zone of negative force per unit area. In instance of Rn sumps, the air current pulls the air from the airing terminus off. Due to this, a likewise impulsive force is created and the Rn gas from the dirt dispels in the ambiance. ( BRE, 1996 ) Depressurizing sumps have the possible to work as a â€Å" vacuity pumps † . The different force per unit area between sump and air, and the at the same time upward air flow in pipes have as a consequence the dirt gases to come in into the sump and afterwards to be driven to the air. The inactive depressurising sumps ( figure 8 ) do non hold a merriment. However, as BRE ( 1999 ) , WHO ( 2009 ) reference, when the decrease is non satisfactory so an in-line fan should be installed in the pipe in order to increase the air flow. The new system will be called active depressurising. ( Figure 9 ) Owing to this, BRE ( 1999 ) , WHO ( 2009 ) propose that when constructing a inactive sump system, builders should put in the system with a manner to be easy transformed subsequently, if it will be necessary. Active pressurising sumps have as a consequence to take the Rn from the house. A fan located in the pipe blows air in the sump which consequences in the decrease of the sump ‘s force per unit area because the air is removed to the land. Therefore, the air of the house tries to equilibrate the force per unit area and this eventually leads radon out of the house. ( BRE 1996 ) Figure 8: Passive depressurizing sump Figure 9: Active depressurising sump Beginning: WHO ( 2009 ) Beginning: WHO ( 2009 ) 3.2 Remedial steps for bing homes In bing homes the remedial steps do non differ from the protective steps for the new buildings. The execution of sumps may be hard and expensive but it is a remedial step with certain results. However, the simplest mitigating step is the waterproofing of the clefts and gaps which permit Rn gas to come in the house. 4. Discussion 6. Decision As mentioned before, there is no peculiar degree of Rn which could be deemed as a safe degree. In add-on, as Jelle ( 2012 ) indicates there is neither a manner of ciphering exactly the Rn which enters inside house nor the exact decrease after the execution of remedial or protective steps. This is because Rn is a gas and it can work even the smallest cleft or hole to come in a house. Therefore, applied scientists, builders, interior decorators and by and large everyone who is involved in a building, should work with professionalism in order to guarantee the best consequence. Romero Essays (826 words) - Scar Romero, English-language Films

Romero In the movie Romero, Archbishop Romero changes very much in his understanding of love and in his understanding of true conscience. At first Romero is just a priest who isn't really concerned about the poor and how they are being oppressed, but when Romero is chosen to be the new Archbishop his friend, who is assassinated, I think has a slight impact on him. But I think when his friend is assassinated is when he really starts to realize what is happening to the country of El Salvador and how the government doesn't want anyone to speak out about this. So, now Romero is starting to action against the government and tries to speak out against them. Here we see Archbishop Romero's true conscience and love grow for the people around him because we see him taking more action against the government. I think that Archbishop Romero defines love as helping others who are in need and others who need his help whatever it may be. We see Romero do this when he starts to lead the revolt in trying to tell the El Salvadoran Government to stop oppressing the poor and treat everyone as human beings. I think Romero has to make a very big decision considering, the gorillas were sending out flyers that said "Be a Patriot, Kill a Priest". The decision that Romero had to make was whether or not to help the poor or just be a puppet for the cardinals that selected him to be a puppet in the beginning. I think the thing that made Romero choose to help out the poor was the love he had for them. I also believe that it was the right (moral) thing to do whether he would have done what he did or not. It wasn't right for the rich to richer and the poor to just keep getting poorer. Romero made a really important decision when he decided to help out the poor because he now became an enemy against the government. Romero grew immensely throughout the entire movie, his love for the people and his conscience (soul, ego) grew as well. Our notes tell us that love requires work it is not just a feeling you have. Romero did a lot work to find his love; he also made a lot of sacrifices. Some of the sacrifices that Romero made were, going into the church when it was taken over by the military Romero still went in knowing that he may be killed, but I think the biggest sacrifice that Romero gave his people was that he gave up his life so that maybe someday they could be free. This resembles Jesus very much, because Jesus gave up his life so that all of our sins would be taken away. Romero is a very brave man for doing this, I don't know many people who would give their lives up so others could be free this is a very non-selfish act. In my opinion there should be more people like this on the earth because there are so many problems that the world has to deal with in this day of age. I think that Oscar Anglo Romero y Glades was a great man for dieing for something that he truly believed in. Romero may have hesitated for a while on what to do, but in the long run what he did to help out the country of El Salvador was a major impact for the government to change. I wish there were more people like Romero in the world today, because there are not a lot of people that would still die for what they believe in like he did. I agree with all of Romero's decisions except one, the one I do not agree with is, how he waited so long to do anything about the countries condition. I hope the people who oppressed the poor and were killing the priests get what they deserve on their judgment day, because what they were doing is totally wrong according to moral standards. In my opinion, the idea of liberation theology is not right. I believe that God, treats every person the same, unless like in the El Salvadorans case you are being oppressed by the government for no reason then I believe that God may side with poor in demanding social justice, because they are being treated unfairly. I also believe that people who pray to God all the time, and not just in times Romero Essays (826 words) - Scar Romero, English-language Films Romero In the movie Romero, Archbishop Romero changes very much in his understanding of love and in his understanding of true conscience. da vinci essays

da vinci essays The Renaissance was a time of learning and culture exchange. Many people discovered what it was like to be someone else. Many others discovered ideas and doctrines and spread them throughout the world. In this time period, people learned to care and give more importance to improvement in society than emphasizing on a persons rank. However, during the Middle Ages, society was more based on the peoples quality than the societys. The Renaissance gave birth to the printing press which led to a very well educated middle class. One middleclass man named Leonardo da Vinci became the spotlight of his time period. Unlike most people, he was interested in about everything that the Renaissance touched. One thing he was very fascinated by was the subject of science. He took great concern in the Scientific Revolution, which included three types of activities: scholasticism, humanism, and experimenting. Da Vinci took part in all three of these which gave him the title of the Renaissance Man. Da Vinci mastered in other areas and aspects of the Renaissance. He was also an artist who used his scientific knowledge to portray the perfect aspects of his works. He familiarized himself with the organs, muscles, tendons, and proportion of the human body. Because he was interested in anatomy, he based most of his works on that and so he achieved his goal of a perfect portrait, such like the Mona Lisa. His artwork always reflected the events or highlights of the Renaissance. The ideas of scholasticism, humanism, and experience are always depicted in his art work. His interest in anatomy also led him to the discovery of the circulation of the blood. But he stopped and accepted his theory that the heart was filled with invisible pores that pumped the blood in and out. Da Vinci was also a mathematician even though his education was not that of an educated man. He had befriended many who had very formal education and had learned to beco...

Marketing Plan for M&S Food Retails Sector Assignment

Marketing Plan for M&S Food Retails Sector - Assignment Example At present, it is unclear whether Marks and Spencer has an established market. Also, it is evident that the products of the firm are still far from establishing a permanent image in the minds of the consumers. It is important to segment the market and decide a particular group that will serve as the target market. Moreover, the marketing team needs to reconcile the attributes of products perceived to be ideal by the consumers and the attributes of the products as developed by the company. The other marketing initiatives necessitate the identification of the price, promotion, product, and place. Mixing these aspects will improve the marketing strategies of the company. It is imperative that Marks and Spencer needs to take advantage of its strengths and limit the negative effects of its weaknesses. Marketing ideas have to be done using creativity with the inclination to use the fundamental tools and concepts. The growth in the UK food retail industry has been unprecedented. Amidst the geographical limitations, UK houses several food retail firms with global distinction. Excluded from this group are the different food retail companies based from the US and the neighbouring European countries. According to the British Retail Consortium (2001), the impact of the food retail industry in the overall economy of UK has been gaining prominence. The figures suggest that the industry has been employing 1.2 million individuals. This translates to more than 5% of the total workforce in UK. Also, the industry is consisted of approximately 60,000 enterprises. Overall, the industry has contributed about 10% of the Gross Domestic Product. Aside from these actual results, the industry continues to flourish with the establishment of policies geared toward competition and favourable market conditions. The sophisticated UK retail market shows variations to styles in relation to the development of products. Despite the failures of some innovations, firms have been optimistic in introducing new products in the market. In particular, food retailers have cited their strengths in marketing as the source of competitiveness. Indeed, the marketing efforts observed in most food retail companies have provided positive outcomes. In particular, firms have become highly focused on the consumers instead of satisfying the corporate goals. The marketing strategies promoted by the firms have become the determinant of success. It is likely that food retail companies with superior marketing dynamics will emerge as the top player in the industry. In UK, the developments in food production have greatly affected food retailers. Specifically, the changing preference of consumers has defined the direction taken by food retail companies. Recent trends suggest that products that are fruit flavoured will become highly popular in UK. Likewise, UK consumers will be highly receptive to food products with distinct yet uncommon combination of flavours. Moreover, functional foods will be highly regarded in the market as well as food that contain low carbohydrates. Basically, UK consumers have become more aware of their food intake because of the hazards attributed to such activity. Health issues and concerns are primary drivers that influence consumers in purchasing certain food products. In the beverage sector, beer manufacturers will continue to challenge the wine

Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution are the Solutions to Teen Violence :: Teens Teenage Violence

Every year, nearly one-million twelve to nineteen year olds are murdered robbed, or assaulted many by their peers and teenagers are more than twice as likely as adults to become the victims of violence. Although the problem is far too complex for any one solution, teaching young people conflict resolution skills, nonviolent techniques for resolving disputes seems to help. To reduce youth violence, conflict resolution skills should be taught to all children before they reach junior high school. First and most important, young people need to learn nonviolent way of dealing with conflict. In a dangerous society where guns are readily available, many young teens feel they have no choice but to respond to an insult or an argument with violence. If they have grown up seeing family members and neighbors react to stress with verbal or physical violence, they may not know that other choices exist. Behavior like carrying a weapon or refusing to back down gives young people â€Å"the illusion of control,† but what they desperately need is to learn real control for example, when provoked, learn to walk away. Next, conflict resolution programs have been shown to reduce violent incidents and empower young people in a healthy way. Many programs and courses in Charlotte Mecklenburg are teaching teens and preteens to work through disagreements without violence. Tools include calmly telling one’s own side of the story and listening to the other person without interrupting or blaming; skills that many adults don’t have! Peer Mediation, a Charlotte Mecklenburg public school program, starts in middle school; it trains students to be mediators, helping peers find their own solutions to conflicts ranging from a fight over a boy or girl friend to interracial gang disputes. Finally, although this appears as just a â€Å"Band-Aid† solution that does not address the root causes of teen violence: poverty, troubled families, bad schools, and drugs. Conflict resolution training saves lives. The larger social issues out there must be addressed, but they will take years to solve, whereas teaching students new

Night World : Spellbinder Chapter 7

I've been looking everywhere for you,† Blaise said. â€Å"I had to call Mrs. Ross to find out you were here.† Her black hair was wild and windblown, tumbling over her shoulders. She had taken off her red bow tie and unbuttoned the top button of her dress shirt. There was color in her cheeks and dark light in her gray eyes. She looked extremely beautiful and very, very witchy. Thea and Eric had moved apart and Thea had the feeling they were both blushing. â€Å"We were just†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Eric said. â€Å"Um. Heh.† While Blaise scrutinized him, he picked up the blue blanket and started refolding it. â€Å"Uh, can I show you around?† â€Å"I don't care much for animals unless they've been shish-kebabed.† Blaise surveyed the room with one hand on her hip. Oh, she's in a terrific mood. Thea's palms were getting damp. She wasn't sure what Blaise thought of the embrace she'd walked in on†¦ but Thea was supposed to be leading Eric on, wasn't she? Her eye fell on the Kleenex daubed with Eric's blood. Unobtrusively, she reached for it and crumpled it in her hand. â€Å"So you left the dance,† she said to Blaise. â€Å"Where's†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Who'd actually been Blaise's date tonight? Sergio? Kevin? Someone else? â€Å"There is no dance,† Blaise said. â€Å"They shut it down. Leave it to Randy-he was always a royal pain.† Then her face changed; she blinked and put on a sweet smile. â€Å"And who are you, darling?† In the doorway to the corridor, Rosamund backed up, Madame Curie clutched to her chest. She didn't say a word, but her hostile green eyes never left Blaise. â€Å"Uh, sorry,† Eric said. â€Å"That's my sister. She's- shy.† â€Å"So this is a family affair,† Blaise said. â€Å"How nice.† Thea said, â€Å"I think it's time to be going home.† She needed to talk to Eric, but alone, not with a disgruntled munchkin and a suspicious witch looking on. She glanced at Eric, feeling a little shy herself. He looked the same. â€Å"Well-see you at school.† â€Å"Yeah.† Suddenly he smiled. â€Å"You know, that's something else I was going to mention. If you're even thinking about going to Davis, you might want to get into honors zoology. It's a good class.† â€Å"Um-we'll see.† She was aware of Blaise watching her. But outside, all Blaise said was, â€Å"Sorry if I was rude. But I've been looking all over for you, so I could tell you what a great time I wasn't having. And†-she shook her midnight hair out with a charming smile;-â€Å"it's so much fun to be a bitch when you want to be.† Thea sighed, then stopped in her tracks. â€Å"Blaise, the car!† Kevin's silver-gray Porsche looked as if it had been through a war. The front bumper was caved in, the passenger door was mangled, and the windshield was cracked. â€Å"I had a little trouble,† Blaise said coolly. â€Å"It's all right, though; I met a guy tonight named Luke Price, who's got a Maserati.† She looked at Thea, then added, â€Å"You don't disapprove, do you? Of treating humans that way?† â€Å"No-of course not. I just don't want to get expelled again.† â€Å"It's not illegal to have an accident. Here, you have to get in through the driver's side now.† She drove, not seeming to choose any particular direction. Thea sat quietly, acutely aware of the probing glances cast her way every so often. â€Å"So,† Blaise said at last in her silkiest voice, â€Å"did you get it?† â€Å"What?† â€Å"Don't be funny.† Thea held out her hand with the crumpled Kleenex on her palm. â€Å"I didn't fill the vial; that was ridiculous. But I used my ingenuity and got enough.† â€Å"Hmm.† Blaise's tapering fingers, tipped with blood-red nails, dosed delicately on the tissue. Startled, Thea snatched it back and the Kleenex tore. She ended up with only a corner. â€Å"Hey-â€Å" â€Å"What's the problem? I just want it for safekeeping,† Blaise said smoothly. â€Å"And so how did everything else go?† â€Å"Fine,† Thea said. Her palms were getting damp, but she managed to keep her voice airy. â€Å"I think he's hooked,† she added, trying to imitate Blaise's most languid and arrogant tones. â€Å"Oh, really?† They had ended up on the strip, which meant the car was now crawling through traffic. Neon highlighted the curious half-smile on Blaise's lips. â€Å"And what was that about Davis?† â€Å"Nothing. It's where he's going to college, so of course he'd like me to be with him.† â€Å"He's already thinking about the future. Well, that was fast work. Congratulations.† Thea didn't like the way she said it. More than ever, she wanted to protect Eric from Blaise-but she wasn't sure how. It depended on how much Blaise suspected. â€Å"You know, I think it's the pop that's the most fun,† Blaise went on reminiscently. â€Å"Human boys are all different-but in the end, they're all the same. And when they give in completely, you can almost hear it. There's a ‘pop.' Like a balloon breaking.† Thea swallowed, staring at the huge golden lion in front of the MGM Grand Hotel. Its green eyes reminded her of Eric. â€Å"Really? Sounds interesting.† â€Å"Oh, it is. And after the pop, they just kind of collapse, and everything they are, their whole self, just sort of pours out in this internal hemorrhage. And after that, of course, they're useless. Like a stag that's too old to mate. They're just-over.† â€Å"How nice.† â€Å"You know, I think Eric's ready for that pop. He's already in love with you; I could see that. I think it's time.† Thea just sat. A vampire girl, wearing a dress with a black rose design, threaded her way through stopped traffic. Finally, Thea said, â€Å"Blaise†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"What, is that a problem with you? Are you having difficulty with that? Are you a little soft on him, maybe? Are you a little too fond of him?† â€Å"Blaise-â€Å" â€Å"Are you in love with him?† Shock waves went through Thea, and the last question seemed to vibrate in the air. At last she whispered, â€Å"Don't be ridiculous.† â€Å"And don't you try to fool me. Remember who you're talking to. I know that dopey look you get when you're mooning over some animal. I saw the way you were holding him.† Thea felt desperate. It wasn't just Blaise she was afraid of here. Night World law couldn't be clearer about the penalty for loving a human. Death. Not only for her, but for Eric, too. There was only one thing Thea could do. She turned and looked at her cousin directly. â€Å"All right, Blaise, you do know me. We've always been like sisters, and I know that however you act sometimes, you still love me-â€Å" â€Å"Of course I do,† Blaise said impatiently, and Thea realized that was part of the problem. In the changing light of the Bally hotel's neon pillars, she could see that Blaise's eyes were wet. She was frightened for Thea-and angry at being frightened. Thea grabbed her cousin's hand. â€Å"Then you have to listen to me.† It was a naked plea. â€Å"Blaise-when I first met Eric, something happened. I can't explain it-I can't even really describe it. But there was a connection. And I know this is going to sound insane, and I know you're not going to like it, but†¦Ã¢â‚¬ She had to stop to breathe. â€Å"Blaise, what if you found your soulmate, and they were something that everybody said you shouldn't love†¦.† She stopped again, this time because Blaise had frozen. For a moment they both just sat, and then, very slowly, Blaise withdrew her hand from Thea's. â€Å"Found†¦ your†¦ soulmate?† she said. Warmth pooled in Thea's eyes. She had never felt so alone. â€Å"I think so,† she whispered. Blaise turned to face the windshield. Purple light shone on her black hair. â€Å"This is more serious than I thought.† The tears overflowed. â€Å"But will you help me?† Blaise tapped her slender fingers on the steering wheel a few times. Finally she said, â€Å"Of course I'll help you. I have to. We're like sisters-I would never abandon you when you're in trouble.† Thea was so relieved she felt dizzy. Paradoxically, it made her cry more. â€Å"I've just been so scared†¦. Ever since it happened, I've been trying to figure things out.† She hiccupped. Blaise was looking at her again, smiling, gray eyes glittering oddly. â€Å"Blaise?† â€Å"I'm going to help you,† Blaise said, still smiling, â€Å"by getting him myself. And then I'm going to kill him for putting my sister in danger.† There was a moment when everything inside Thea seemed absolutely still-and the next instant it all exploded into chaos. â€Å"Never,† she said. â€Å"Do you hear me, sister? Never.† Blaise stayed calm, driving. â€Å"I know you don't think it's best-now. But one day you'll thank me.† â€Å"Blaise, listen to me. If you do anything to him-if you hurt him-it's me you're hurting.† â€Å"You'll get over it.† In the rainbow light of the Riviera, Blaise looked like some ancient goddess of fate. â€Å"It's better to hurt a little now than to be executed later.† Thea was so angry she was shaking. So angry that she made a mistake. If she'd kept on arguing the same points, she thought later, Blaise might eventually have started to listen. But she was furious and terrified and she blurted out, â€Å"Well, I don't think you can do it. I don't think you could take him from me if you tried.† Blaise stared, as if caught for once at a loss for words. Then she threw back her head and laughed. â€Å"Thea,† she said. â€Å"I can take any boy from anybody. Any time, any place, any way I want to. That's what I do.† â€Å"Not this time. Eric loves me, and you can't change that. You can't take him.† Blaise was wearing a secret smile. But she said only two words as she turned off the strip and onto darkened streets again. â€Å"Watch me.† Thea didn't sleep well. She kept seeing Randy Marik's face, and when she dreamed, it turned into Eric's face, blood-streaked and vacant-eyed. She woke up to see sunshine streaming in the room. It was a bedroom with a split personality. One side was fairly neat and decorated in pale blues and spring greens. The other side was messy and was decorated in the color, the primal color, the one that roused emotions, that meant passion and hatred both. Red. And usually Blaise was lying on that side underneath her red velvet Ralph Lauren bedspread, but this morning she was gone already. A bad omen. Blaise only got up early for a reason. Thea got dressed and went downstairs warily. The shop was empty except for Tobias sitting gloomily in his usual place beside the cash register. He grunted when Thea said hello and went on staring at the wall, one hand clutching his curly brown hair. Wishing, undoubtedly, to be outside on the weekend like other nineteen-year-old guys. Thea went into the workshop. Blaise was sitting at the long table, wearing earphones and humming to herself. A project was spread in front of her. Thea stalked up close. She could see right away that it was beautiful. Blaise was a genius at creating jewelry, most of it based on ancient designs. She made necklaces of bees and butterflies, spiraling flowers, serpents, leaping dolphins. It was all alive, all joyous†¦ all magical. That was where the real genius came in. Blaise put each element of the piece together with a purpose in mind. The gems were chosen to enhance each other: ruby for desire, black opal for obsession, topaz for yearning, garnet for heat. And asteria, the smoke-gray form of sapphire with a six-pointed star. Blaise's stone, just the color of her eyes. Blaise had them all laid out loose. But her magic wasn't just in the gems. Interwoven into every piece were herb caches, tiny compartments that could be filled with potions or powders. She could literally drench the jewelry in sorcery. Even the design itself could be a spell. Every line, every curve, every flower stem could have a meaning, could make the eye follow a pattern that was as powerful as any symbol traced on the floor in chalk. Just looking at the piece could be enough to charm you. Right now Blaise was working on a necklace to knock you dead. Thea could see it taking shape. Blaise used the lost wax method of jewelry-making, which meant that she carved out her pieces in stiff blue wax before casting them in silver or copper or gold. What she was carving now was breathtaking. Heart-stopping. An intricate masterpiece that was going to have roughly the same effect as Aphrodite's magic girdle- which meant no male was going to be able to look at it without falling under the spell. And she had some of Eric's blood. The vital ingredient that meant she'd be able to personalize this spell for him. The one good thing was that it would take Blaise a few days to finish this piece. But once it was done†¦. Eric didn't have a chance in Hades. Thea backed up, not knowing-and not caring- whether Blaise had noticed her. She headed blindly for her bedroom. She and Eric were soulmates. But Blaise was, in some ways, Aphrodite herself. And who could resist that? What am I going to do? She had a little of Eric's blood herself on the corner of the tissue. But she could never outmatch Blaise in creating love spells. Blaise had years of experience and a natural talent that left everyone else in the dust. So I have to think of something else. Something to keep her from getting to him in the first place. To protect him†¦ Thea straightened up. I can't. It's too dangerous. The summoning spells aren't for maidens. Even the Inner Circle has to be careful with those. But Grandma has the materials. I know she does. I've seen the box. It may kill me even to try. An odd serenity came over her. If she concentrated on that-on the risk-she felt better than if she thought about what Gran would say if she found out. She wasn't afraid to face danger for Eric. And as long as she kept thinking about that, she could block out the thought that her idea was not only dangerous, but wrong. This time she went down the stairs almost as if she were sleepwalking. Calm and detached. â€Å"Toby, where's Gran?† He lifted his head a bare inch. â€Å"She went to see Thierry Descouedres, something about his land. Told me to come and pick her up tonight.† Thierry was a vampire and a Night Lord. He owned a lot of the land northeast of Las Vegas-but what did Gran have to do with that? It didn't matter. The important thing was that Gran wouldn't be back all day. â€Å"Well, then, why don't you go out and have some fun? I can watch the shop.† Tobias looked at her with dazed blue eyes-and then his round face lit up. â€Å"Seriously? You'd do that? I could kiss you. Let's see, I'll go visit Kishi†¦ no, maybe Zoe†¦ no, maybe Sheena†¦.† Like all boy witches, he was in tremendous demand with the girl witches in town. Still muttering, he checked his wallet, grabbed the car keys, and headed for the door as if Thea might change her mind any second. â€Å"I'll be back in time to pick her up, I promise,† he said hastily and was out the door. The instant he was gone, Thea turned the sign on the door to closed, locked up, and tiptoed to the counter. It was in the locked lower shelf, an iron chest that looked five hundred years old. Thea picked it up with an effort-it was heavy. With her teeth gritted and her eyes on the bead curtain that separated the store from Grandma's workshop, she staggered up the stairs. She made two other trips downstairs to gather materials. The bead curtain never stirred. Last, she went to Gran's bedroom. On a nail near the headboard was a heavy ring with dozens of keys. Thea took it. Back in her own bedroom she shut the door and stuffed a towel underneath so Blaise wouldn't smell the smoke. Okay, now let's get this thing open. She sat crosslegged on the floor in front of the chest. It wasn't hard to find the key that would fit the lock-she just looked for the oldest and crudest iron key on the ring. It fit perfectly and the chest opened. Inside was a bronze box, and inside that a silver box. And inside the silver box was an ancient book with yellowing, brittle pages, and a small green bottle with wax and ribbons securing its cork. There were also thirty or forty amulets. Thea picked one up and examined it. A lock of blond hair had been twisted and woven into a knot, and then sealed in that shape with a round piece of clay. The clay was dark earthy red, and Thea touched it reverently. It had been made with mud-and the blood of a witch. An entire Circle had probably worked on this for weeks: charging the blood, chanting, mixing it with secret ingredients, baking it in a ritual fire. I'm touching a witch, Thea thought. The very essence of somebody who's been dead hundreds of years. The cabalistic sign stamped on the front of the amulet was supposed to show who the witch was. But lots of the pieces of clay were so worn that Thea couldn't make out any trace of a symbol. Don't worry. Find a description of somebody in the book, and then match the amulet to them. She turned the fragile pages of the book carefully, trying to read the spidery, faded writing. Ix U Sihnal. Annie Butter, Markus Klingelsmith . .. no, they all sound too dangerous, hudo Cagliostro- maybe. But I don't really want an alchemist. Dm Ratih, Omiya Inoshishi†¦ wait a minute. Phoebe Garner. She scanned the page on Phoebe eagerly. A gentle girl from England who had lived before the Burning Times and had kept familiars. She'd died young of tuberculosis, but had been considered a blessing by everyone who'd known her-even humans, who appreciated her ability to deflect spells from her village. Human villagers had mourned at her grave. Perfect, Thea thought. Then, she began scrabbling through the amulets, looking for one with the same symbol impressed on the clay as the book showed by Phoebe's name. There it was! She cradled the amulet in ?her palm. Phoebe's hair had been auburn and very fine. Okay. Now get the balefire ready. It had to be made from oak and ash, the two kinds of wood that had been burned to bake the clay. Thea put the dry sticks in her grandmother's largest bronze bowl and lit them. Now add quassia chips, blessed thistle, mandrake root. Those were just for general power raising. The real magic was in the tiny bottle that had been carved out of a single piece of malachite. It was the summoning potion, and Thea had no idea at all what was in it.
